Religious Education September 2018 Newsletter

Religious Education September 2018 Newsletter

As September approaches, we get ready for a season of change and RE is ready to change right along with it! We have a lot of new and exciting things happening this year:

  • RE has hired a Youth Group Advisor! AJ Ryan will be leading our older youth 6th-12th grade in various bonding and team building exercises as well as several outreach projects.  Youth Group will meet on all the same Sundays as PS-5th’s RE lessons (total of 13 Sundays).  The older youth will also be invited to help with some of the workshops and group lessons for PS-5th grade (up to 8 Sundays).
  • “Whole Congregation Worship” (WCW) Services: On these Sundays, all ages remain in service to worship together.  WCW services will be held a total of 18 Sundays- approximately 2 Sundays a month, including every communion service on the 1st Sunday of the month.  4th, 5th & 6th grade is still invited to help with the service on communion Sundays~ please arrive 15 minutes early on these Sundays and meet with the deacons to get your part.
  • RE will hold various Wednesday evening group lessons for those families who want more exposure to Religious Education and/or for those who are unable to make it to our Sunday lessons! Exact dates for these lessons have not been planned out yet.
  • RE will also hold special family lessons with activities during coffee hour! These activities will be held on some of the Sundays we have WCW service, and will require families to all work together!
  • New Nursery Caretaker: We are pleased to announce that our new nursery caretaker is Kiley Flanagan! Kiley is no stranger to the nursery room or to our RE program.  The Flanagan family are long time members of FPCU, and since making her affirmation in 2016, Kiley has been an active volunteer in the nursery room and in the PS/PK classroom.  Kiley will be in the Nursery most Sundays from 10am-12pm.  Following our policy, there will be a volunteer in the nursery with her as well.

Quick Glimpse of This Year’s Curriculum

This Year’s World Religion Focus is on Chinese Religions: Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism.  Children will learn about this faith through workshops & group lessons held throughout the RE year!

  • Pre-School & Pre-K will continue to use the UU curriculum Chalice Children: A Tapestry of Faith Program for Children. This curriculum introduces the basic tenets of our UU faith: love, community, celebration of diversity, a personal sense of wonder and awe, and our hope and work for a better world.
  • KG-2nd grade will be using the UU based curriculum Picture Book Bible Tales. This curriculum is fun, friendly and concise with teachable moments that introduce classic Bible Tales to young elementary children.  This program will acquaint them with tales that are part of our culture and show them how to find universal messages of inspiration and hope.
  • 3rd grade RE lessons continue to build on the foundations of Bible Stories learned in earlier grades and also take a closer look at what our church and faith deems important. The most famous bible stories will be reviewed and discussed. Curriculum is being created by the DRE with the help of the students.
  • 4th & 5th grade will be using the UU curriculum Toolbox of Faith , which invites students to reflect on the qualities of our UU faith as tools they can use in living their lives and building their own faith. Each lessons uses a different tool as a metaphor for an important quality of faith.
  • Youth Group will not be using any specific curricula this year. Our goal is to build a strong group of youth who want to be active members of our church…while having fun and learning a little too!
